Awlgrip HDT, High Definition Technology, Application Guidance
When first using Awlgrip HDT, you may notice it behaves differently compared to other topcoats. To assist with initial application, up to 12.5% of reducer (T0001, T0002, T0003, T0005, or T0031) may be added to improve surface wetting. Please note that the use of additional reducer may require an extra coat and will render the system non-VOC compliant.
Once applicators become familiar with Awlgrip HDT, it’s often possible to achieve a high-quality finish without using extra reducer.
It is recommended to pre-mix the Activator (OA0010, OA0015, or OA0020) with your selected reducer in equal parts. This 1:1 activator/reducer mix can then be added at 25% to the 1:1 base and curing solution. This results in a total mixture of 1:1:0.5, with the final product containing the recommended 12.5% activator and 12.5% reducer.
Thanks to the ability to select activators and reducers based on temperature, Awlgrip HDT offers excellent flexibility across a wide range of conditions. The chart on page 1 provides general guidance.
Cool temperatures: Use the standard paint mix with a fast activator such as OA0020. If needed, T0001 or T0002 can be added to help maintain a wet edge.
Moderate temperatures: OA0015 activator paired with T0003 reducer is recommended.
Hot to very hot conditions: OA0010 (slow activator) with T0005 or T0031 reducer will provide better control.
If wet edge retention is an issue—especially on large surfaces—solvent addition can help. Begin with 5% reducer and adjust as necessary.
When blending activators for better control, we recommend using the extremes (OA0010 and OA0020) to fine-tune your mix.
For larger or critical projects, a test panel application (pre-shoot) is strongly recommended. This allows the applicator to determine the optimal setup for the project size and prevailing conditions.
