For Derakane Momentum Resin 470-300

Cobalt 6% (typically supplied as cobalt naphthenate 6% solution) is a widely used accelerator in the curing of unsaturated polyester and vinyl ester resins.

It contains approximately 6% elemental cobalt dissolved in a hydrocarbon carrier, allowing it to act as a promoter that activates organic peroxides such as MEKP and benzoyl peroxide at room temperature.

By speeding up the resin’s gel and cure time, cobalt 6% enables faster laminate build, improved workshop productivity, and better control over polymerisation in FRP fabrication processes like hand lay-up, spray-up, casting, RTM and pultrusion.

It is typically added at 0.1–0.5% by weight of resin, depending on resin type, peroxide initiator and temperature. Although essential for curing performance, cobalt solutions must be handled with care due to their flammability and classification as a skin sensitiser and suspected carcinogen, requiring proper PPE and storage in accordance with SDS guidelines.
